I can’t believe that it’s already October! In addition to the month change, the weather is actually beginning to cool down here, and I am ecstatic! For day 3 of Blogtober, I am posting my September wrap-up!
This month I participated in the Hogwarts-A-Thon hosted by @Laureads_ and @niffler_reads. There were 7 books on this prompt with one bonus book. I only read 6 of the 8 books on my TBR, but I did read the challenge book and I finished the not listed books Fix Her Up and Everything Girl. So I did technically read 8 books this month- which would mean I reached my goal- but they weren’t the ones on the list. Hm… I give myself 90% credit 😊
Alrighty, so the books I finished in September:
On the Come Up by Angie Thomas (5/5)
Genre: YA Contemporary

Bri has always wanted to make it as a rapper, and when she gets the chance to rap battle in the ring, she can’t pass it up. Follow Bri as she learns how to trust in family, let go of grudges, and become the person who you want to be.
This book was phenomenally written by Angie Thomas who took deep, painful issues and wrote about them in a way that is more understandable for people who never experienced the struggles of poverty, gang life, and loss. However, by discussing these areas, the book offers acceptance to people who have fought these battles.
Red, White, & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (5/5)
Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Alex, the son of the U.S. President, and Henry, a Prince of Wales, were long ago cast as competitors for magazines and girls’ hearts. However, Alex’s dislike of Henry may change when they are forced into a fake friendship to smooth over U.S./ British relations after they argue into a newsworthy, international incident.
Not everything is how it seems in this hilarious, relatable book that combines love, friendships, coming-out, and politics into a wonderful mess of a plot. I loved reading this book, and all the characters were perfect! Also, I would definitely vote for Alex’s mom for President!
Six Goodbyes We Never Said by Candace Ganger (5/5)
Genre: YA Contemporary

This is an amazingly crafted book that tells the story of two teenagers whose worlds collide as they deal with the loss of their parents. This book discusses grief, mental illness, and suicide, from the points of view of seventeen year-olds, Dew and Naima.
I loved this book because of how real and raw it felt. I cried a ton during this story, and the author did an amazing job at showing that grief is a continuous process. Read my full review here.
Now I Rise by Kiersten White (4/5)
Genre: YA Historical Fiction/ Fantasy

This book is the second in the Conqueror’s Saga, preceded by And I Darken (my review here). This book took an even darker turn than the first, but I still enjoyed reading it! Watching all the characters struggle through this bloody, messed-up plot was depressing, but I felt like their personalities began to shine through brighter. I am worried about where the next book is going, and I can’t wait to read the conclusion!
Not Hungry by Kate Karyus Quinn (3.5/5)
Genre: YA Contemporary Poetry

This is a short-story about a high school-aged girl who secretly struggles with an eating disorder. The book talks about the secrets that people keep, admitting truths, and letting go of your insecurities.
I enjoyed this book, although the short story format kept me from connecting to the characters as I would have liked to. I would recommend this book to others because of its messages of love and acceptance! Read my full review here.
The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi (5/5)
Genre: YA Fantasy

Set in 1889, this book follows Severin and his unlikely band of rebels/ friends: Laila, Zofia, Tristan, and Enrique. Stealing from the Order of Babel for power, these misfits find themselves in the middle of a plot that threatens the world as they know it.
I loved how creative this book was. The concept of gilding objects to have magical qualities was fascinating, and the setting was gorgeous (as is the cover!!!). I enjoyed reading from these characters’ points of view, and I can’t wait to see what happens next for them in The Silvered Serpents which is released on February 4, 2020.
Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey (2/5)
Genre: Adult Romance

He’s a baseball superstar who was injured and sent home to nurse his hurt ego. She’s a young lady who wants to be treated like an adult. Meeting again after many years, Travis and Georgie decide to help each other by fake dating, but will they get more than they bargained for?
This was the first adult romance that I have read, and I definitely could tell! I enjoyed this book’s female characters and overall plot, but I did not enjoy the men. I would recommend reading this book to make your own opinion, but I thought the men were mildly sexist and alpha-maley.
Everything Girl by Emily Mayer (5/5)
Genre: New Adult Romance

Evelyn loves plans. But what happens if her plans go awry? Evelyn takes a work trip to Montana with her boss and finds a piece of herself that has been missing for a long time. This book is about veering from life’s plan and learning to live in the moment with people who you love.
This book was adorable, hilarious, and amazing. I loved every piece of this story including its phenomenal characters, stunning plot, relatable dialogue, and breathtaking relationships. Pick this book up! Check out my full review here!
That’s all for now! Thanks for reading! If you have read any of these books and want to discuss, leave a comment below! What are your most recent favorite reads?
