Hello everyone! Today I’m bringing you a review for an amazing book about putting yourself out there, being confident in who you are, and pushing the limits that people force on you.
Title: I’ll Be the One
Author: Lyla Lee
Genre: YA Contemporary
Content Warnings: Homophobia, verbal abuse, fatphobia
Skye Shin is an unapologetic, plus-sized girl who longs to become a famous K-Pop star, and she is determined to not like the fatphobic industry get in her way. When Skye decides to audition for both the singing and dancing categories of a televised K-Pop competition, she nails the audition. However, once she is a part of the program, she begins to feel overwhelmed by the drama of the event and the feelings she begins to form for a fellow competitor. In this book, Skye faces harsh criticism for her body and some concerns about her sexuality, and she must learn to face the challenges head-on and accept herself- her true self.
This was such a cute, real book! Skye was such a lovable, fun main character, and I found myself truly rooting for her throughout the entire book. She has such a strong, determined personality, and I am proud of everything she accomplished throughout this book. This book was easy to read, and it made me laugh and cry – and I loved it!
Although I adored many of the characters in this book, there were also many people who I detested. Skye faces so much unfair treatment and disgusting comments about her weight, and these parts are painful to read. That being said, the author did a wonderful job balancing the positive and the negative and truly allowing Skye to shine as a beacon of confidence and truth for people everywhere. The challenge of body image was discussed wonderfully in this book, and I think many young girls can finally feel represented with this story.
I loved reading this book, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a story about a singing and dancing competition, queer romance, and loving yourself and your body.
I loved Skye! She is such a strong character, and I loved seeing her stand up to her mom and Jang Bora. That judge was absolutely awful. Her discrimination and fat shaming against Skye’s body was just awful, and I kind of wish Skye had sued her- but oh well. Skye’s mom was also incredibly rude, and I feel so bad for all the comments that she has had to endure over the years. We can truly see the emotional scars that Skye’s mom left on her, and it was difficult to read. On the other hand, Skye’s mom was also strangely supportive at times, and I felt like she was a very fascinating, well-developed character overall.
Skye and Henry were adorable, and I loved watching their relationship form throughout the book! Their taco truck “not” date was sweet, and I thought their dancing was exciting. When they came out as bi to each other, I was grinning! It was so sweet! The romantic tension between them was amazing, and I am happy that they figured everything out and that Henry had her back throughout the entire show.
Skye has such great friends, and they were enjoyable to read about. Her school friends were sweet, but my favorites were Lana and Tiffany. Lana was amazing, and I loved how much she stood up for Skye and helped her feel like she fits in! She was a breath of fresh air! I was also glad that the author didn’t try to make a love triangle between the girls because I love Lana and Tiffany’s relationship, and it was great to see such a sweet, Lesbian couple supported in this book. I felt bad that their families didn’t fully support them, but they were doing well and I did love them as a couple.
The end song with backup dancers, choreography, and singing was absolutely amazing. I started tearing up, and I am so proud of Skye for taking the stage and being unapologetically herself. ❤️
All in all, I loved the book, and I would love to hear your thoughts about it!
