Adunni has always wanted to make her mother proud and attend school so she could grow up educated and have a voice to speak up for herself and other people living in Nigeria. When her mother dies and Adunni is forced into marriage, her life seems to take a turn for the worse. Many challenges and opportunities face Adunni in this stunning, heartfelt story about making the best out of a bad situation and getting the chance of a lifetime.
Unspoilery Review
It took me some time to get into this book, but it really grew on me. This was a powerful story about taking chances and following your dreams. I learned so much about Nigeria and its culture during this book, and I have a much stronger understanding about the struggles people face here. This book had a beautiful message about educating yourself and the people around you to build a better future. I believe everyone should read this book, and I am so glad that I picked it up.
Adunni was a strong, powerful young lady with a drive. Although she is only fourteen, her circumstances and experiences make her seem much older. That being said, I wish Adunni, and other Nigerian ladies, had the opportunity to have more of a childhood. In addition, this book introduces the idea that women should be educated instead of being forced into marriage. This book challenged the typical idea that women’s main purpose in life is to be sold for a bride price and work in another’s home.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a beautiful story about believing in yourself and succeeding despite the odds being stacked against you.
Spoilery Review
Adunni really grew on me throughout the story! I felt awful for everything she had to face at such a young age. Her brother and her had such a sweet relationship, and it was sad to see that come to an end. I hope that in the future, Adunni can return to her home as an educated young woman who can bring change and innovation into her village. She has the potential to be such a bright light to women in her situation, and I believe the author met her goal of supporting these women by writing this book.
Seeing Adunni’s life shift from being a daughter, to a wife, to a fugitive, to a maid, and finally to a student was powerful. I loved how pieces of her personality shined through all her situations- her brains, her sass, and her singing. There were so many pieces of this book that were difficult to read- especially the deaths, the beatings, and the attempted rape. That being said, these challenges made the book all the more realistic and powerful.
My only complaint is that I wish there was more redemption for the men in this book. They all seemed awful; however, I did like how Adunni solved her own problems and didn’t get a love interest who solved them for her. I loved her female friendships throughout the book!
