Hello everyone! Today I’m bringing you a review for a fun, YA Contemporary about love, food rivalry, and familial expectations.
Title: A Pho Love Story
Author: Loan Le
Genre: YA Contemporary
Bao Nguyen and Linh Mai have both grown up living around and working in their parents’ pho restaurant. Although the Nguyen and Mai’s restaurants are across the street from each other, they are rivals, so Bao and Linh have only spoken once. Until one day they run into each other and get placed on a project together reviewing and drawing other restaurants for the school newspaper. As Bao and Linh begin to secretly spend time together, a relationship starts to grow and they wonder if their families’ have a hidden history.
While I enjoyed reading this book, it was not quite as captivating as I would have liked. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, their lives as children of Vietnamese immigrants, and growing up around a restaurant. Also, their stories and the star-crossed lovers concept was well done, and I loved hearing about the parents’ lives and struggles in Vietnam. This is such an important perspective that I don’t see done often.
However I felt like some aspects of the story were not fully flushed out which kept me from getting fully engulfed in the book. Also, I sometimes struggled switching between the two points of view because they seemed to be written similarly.
Overall, I enjoyed this cute rom com full of food, Vietnamese culture, and creativity. While I wish the plot was explained more clearly and we got to know the families better, I did have fun reading this book. I recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy, sweet YA Contemporary about forbidden love, family secrets, and living your dream.
