“Power does not transform you, he’d said. It only reveals you.”
Hello everyone! Today I’m bringing you a book review for a thrilling, fascinating story created around Greek mythology but set in present day.
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Content Warnings: Violence, Death, Graphic imagery
After angering Zeus, seven Olympian gods and goddesses are forced into the Agon every seven years where they become mortal and are hunted by the lines of Ancient Greek heroes who try to take their power and ascend as “new gods”. This story takes place in the modern age and follows Lore, the last of the line of Perseus, as she tries to escape the grasp of the Agon and its powerful players.
What a fascinating book! This was such a fun take on Greek myths, and I loved how detailed and complex this stand-alone fantasy novel was. This book definitely picked up speed as the story progressed and we started understanding the world and the competition better. It was exciting and descriptive, and I had a blast reading it!
That being said, this is an intense, violent book full of a complex, Greek mythology-based story that will not work for all readers.
The Agon was such an insane concept. It was so brutal, intense, and complex. I loved how much work went into building up the Agon so readers could truly understand the significance, dedication, and training that went into this “game.” Learning about the different houses, gods, hunters, and players was complicated but also totally worth it to fully enjoy this book.
Lore was such an interesting main character because we can see her being torn between hating the Agon and being trained to succeed in it. She was such a morally-grey, complex character full of power and skill- oh and she had an insane backstory!
Overall I adored the characters in this book. I loved seeing everyone grow to trust each other and work together throughout the story, and the plot really keeps readers on their toes. Full of violence, deception, and power, this book was an intense story that I honestly couldn’t put down. I loved it!
Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Do you like stories about Greek myths? (I do!!)
I would love to hear your thoughts!
