Unspoilery Review: 5 STARS
“My side-eye game was strong this morning.”
This book had amazing characters! Evelyn has her social support in all areas of her life. At her job in Chicago, Evelyn has two friends who are also executive assistants to other people in the company. Anna and Hilary are hilarious, and they provide us with all the juicy work gossip about Ben’s amazingly attractive, rodeo star brother, Jack Danvers. Evelyn also has two sisters, Corinne and Elise, who text all day in their group chat and fully support each other, and Evelyn’s craziness, throughout the whole story. Lastly, on Pinehaven Ranch, there is a wonderfully developed family of friends, starring Mary, Gabe, Jack, Cole, Margot, and Lettie. I adored all these people, and I am amazed that Emily Mayer was able to fully develop each one of these characters in such a short book. I constantly mix up characters in friend groups because they often are not different enough; however, I kept straight all these characters because each one had their own voice and personality.
Yessssss the romance… So, I love a good romance, chick-flick story. My problem is that I don’t always like adulty books because they are just too sexual for me to thoroughly enjoy (although you do you). This book was PERFECT! The romance was slow-burn and beautiful, but there was also a nice amount of conclusion at the end of the book (I hate it when the characters get together right when the book ends and you’re like ‘umm hello? I want to see them. I love them and need to read about their relationship, now.’). Both characters were funny, sexy and amazing to read, and I hard-core related to almost everything that Evelyn thought/said throughout the entire book.
This book is rated for adults, I think that is accurate because there is a fair amount of cussing, drinking, and sexual parts. That being said, I absolutely loved the book. It had a wonderful blend of female empowerment and romance that made me smile, and I appreciated how the author did not shy away from the issues of being a woman in the workplace. The characters were stunning, the setting sounded beautiful, and the town of Pinehaven sounds right out of a postcard/ Halmark movie. I laughed so much in this book, and I got warm fuzzy feelings constantly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a sweet, hilarious book that makes you feel happy and in love.
Excerpt:
“A thought struck me suddenly, like a bolt of lightning appearing without warning. I wanted that. All my planning, all my dreaming—it had been about accomplishing something. It had been about building a career for myself that I could be proud of, one that checked off everything on my list. There was no room for anything or anyone else. It was hollow and empty and really sad, and it made me feel all of those things. This—being in the car with friends;Margot singing in the front seat, Gabe laughing every time she messed up the words; even being tucked close to Jack—this made me feel something so good. This was worth something.“
